Before Root Canal

In the course of our work we find that most of the patients are more or less worried before the surgical intervention. Moreover, we also feel that after the intervention almost everybody finds it much more simple than before.

Some prior preparation and planning will help ensure that things go smoothly.

Please, read the instructions below carefully, and print it if possible, to be able to read it again. It makes you feel sure, you won’t forget anything and will make all the preparations.

  • Please wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing. However, it helps you feel free.
  • Please refrain from facial make-up.
  • Please advise us of any medications you are taking.
  • Aspirin-containing drugs should be discontinued for 7 days prior to surgery.
  • Medications prescribed by your physician (i.e. for high blood pressure, etc.) should be taken at their regular time and dosage unless otherwise instructed.
  • Alcoholic beverages must be avoided 12 hours prior to, and 48 hours after the procedure.
  • Do not smoke for 12 hours before treatment and for 72 hours after root canal therapy.

After Root Canal

Your root canal treatment is complete. However it is normal for your tooth to be sore for 2-3 days after treatment. Tenderness to biting may persist for up to two weeks following treatment but will gradually get better over time.

Instructions:

  • Please do not chew or attempt to eat on the side of your mouth that has been worked on while this area is still numb.
  • Use ice pack for 10-15 minutes and keep it off for 5 minutes, for the rest of the day following dental surgery. In fact, this will help minimize swelling.
  • LIE DOWN AND REST with your head above your heart during the day and tonight when you sleep.
  • Eat a soft diet for at least two days and remember not to chew on the treated side. Avoid very hot or cold foods during the healing process.
  • TAKE YOUR ANTIBIOTICS as directed on the bottle. Take your antibiotics until they are ALL finished. Do not take them at the same time as your pain medication. Wait about an hour in order.
  • Do not smoke during the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Please avoid crunchy or hard foods which could cause the tooth without a crown to fracture.
  • Frequent rinsing with warm salt water for the next 48 hours.
